{"id":65,"date":"2019-01-13T17:21:58","date_gmt":"2019-01-14T00:21:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/codingrestart.com\/?p=65"},"modified":"2019-01-19T17:33:43","modified_gmt":"2019-01-20T00:33:43","slug":"okrs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/codingrestart.com\/home\/okrs\/","title":{"rendered":"OKRs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently I read several articles on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/OKR\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OKRs<\/span><\/a>&nbsp;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Objectives and Key Results), a method for setting and tracking the goals leading to better alignment of goals in an organization. OKRs were started by Andy Grove of Intel and first documented in his book \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/High-Output-Management-Andrew-Grove\/dp\/0679762884\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High Output Management<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d from 1983. The OKRs concept is built on&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Management_by_objectives\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Management By Objectives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;approach created by Peter Drucker in 50s. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The central principle of OKRs is that each objective (what) is accompanied by several key results (how), that are measurable and can be answered in yes\/no format. Great introduction to OKRs is this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/john_doerr_why_the_secret_to_success_is_setting_the_right_goals\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TED talk by John Doerr<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who also wrote a book about it \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Measure-What-Matters-Google-Foundation\/dp\/0525536221\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Measure What Matters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d. Doerr has a web site <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whatmatters.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">www.whatmatters.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with more content.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OKRs are apparently used by all Google employees. The process of using OKRs at Google is described in the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mJB83EZtAjc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Startup Lab Workshop<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d video (over an hour). The video is from 2012 and is considered by some not up to date, but still explains in detail basic concepts. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A web site by one of the proponents of OKRs who makes living teaching companies how to use them is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/felipecastro.com\/en\/okr\/what-is-okr\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
